Burst Pipe Water Damage

Burst pipes can happen for many reasons, including freezing pipes, high water pressure, and degraded and damaged materials.  Water damage from burst pipes can be one of the most expensive restoration projects a property owner could face.  With over twenty years of experience servicing the community with water damage, SI Restoration offers several unique tips to ensure your property is ready to be restored after burst pipes.

Burst Pipe Damage Preparation and Prevention

Image removed.Among the many frequently asked questions about water damage, property owners ask, “How do you prepare for water damage from burst pipes?”

First, find a water damage service that fits your needs and can handle your situation.  Finding the right water damage contractor during the emergency is much more difficult than having one in mind before disaster strikes.  SI Restoration offers service to Maryland and Washington DC with emergency restoration services.  We also offer many restoration tips and guides on how to prepare for and prevent large disasters like water damage, fire damage, mold remediation services, and biohazard cleanup.

Secondly, maintain your pipes as best as possible throughout the year.  Frozen pipes are the number one reason for burst pipes.  Make sure all pipes, especially those exposed to the outdoors, are properly insulated.  When vacating a property for an extended period of time, make sure faucets are left on a trickle to avoid freezing water in the pipes.  Also, temperatures indoors should never fall below 55 degrees (F).  Though water freezes at 36 degrees (F), the likelihood of frozen pipes are greater when temperatures indoors do not compensate piping exposed to outdoor temperatures.

Locate Your Water Main

Whether preparing for burst pipes or in the midst of a water damage emergency, knowing where the water main to your property is located is essential to preventing catastrophic damages.  Also, make sure that all occupants of the home or commercial property are familiar with where the water main is located in the event of an emergency.

Turn Off Electric

When pipes burst, a restoration crew will be called in to take care of the water damage.  Ensure the safety of the water damage restoration technicians and the occupants of the property by turning off all electric to the affected area.  This will prevent dangerous fire hazards and electrocution.

Remove Debris from Drains

If any drains are located near the affected area, be sure they are free from debris or blockage.  This will assist the water damage technicians when restoring damage from your bust pipes.
