“3 tips to assist you in picking the right contractor when handling and dealing with a fire damage”

1. Is the company IICRC certified.
Many construction and home improvement companies may say that they have done countless fire damage restoration jobs, only to find out it was only a hand few. To an inexperienced construction company, fire damage homes and building look easy to restore. In fact the opposite is true. An IICRC certified company has the training to understand hidden smoke odor and knowing when and when not to restore fire damage items and structural materials. Remember it’s frustrating to smell smoke odor after the construction is completed ( you have to tear everything out again to remove the odor .)
2. What language is that insurance adjuster speaking ?
There is a whole language and unspoken rules that the fire damage restoration contractor and insurance adjuster speak. It’s not to hide anything from you, it’s just easier to deal with the fire damage situations that way. Having a non fire damage restoration company ( general contractor ), handle your fire damage dwelling can lead to great frustration with both your adjuster , your contractor and you. An experienced IICRC fire damage restoration with years experience usually produces a smooth restoration process ( and knows the lingo and process ).
3.
Communication: Do they have a communication process?
The biggest issue among anyone dealing with construction repair and fire damage clean up is communication. When I ask other contractors about how they communicate with their customers to make sure that their customers are in the loop, all of them say they do a great job. When I ask them if they have a communication program and procedure that every employee uses they say no.
If the biggest issue is communication between adjusters, property owners, and contractors how come the contractors I asked said they didn’t have a problem.
So when you ask a fire damage restoration company about how they communicate ( keep you in the loop so you know what’s happening ), make sure they have a actual communication plan.
If they don’t, have them call me Jeff Cohn 410-458-5371 and I’ll assist them.
