| The Environmental Protection Agency says on mold that......." molds can be found almost anywhere; they can grow on virtually any organic substance, as long as moisture and oxygen are present. There are molds that can grow on wood, paper, carpet, foods, and insulation. When excessive moisture accumulates in buildings or on building materials, mold growth will often occur, particularly if the moisture problem remains undiscovered or unaddressed. It is impossible to eliminate all mold and mold spores in the indoor environment. However, mold growth can be controlled indoors by controlling moisture indoors."

| Please be-careful when choosing companies that perform mold removal. Because in many states including Maryland, mold removers can either perform mold removal services incorrectly or use mold removing services as away of taking advantage of consumers.
When choosing a mold removal service, please follow these guidelines:
A. Mold removal services must have some type of containment with a negative air system running.
B. Mold removal services must follow IICRC guidelines S520. Not doing so will make the legal process more challenging for the property owner.
C. Mold removal companies must have appropriate environmental insurance. Many property owners take it for granite when a mold remover says they have insurance. Make sure you ask your mold removal company for a Certificate of Insurance from their agent sent to you!!
| Below SI Restoration has created some frequent questions and answers .
Question 1: " Can't we just use bleach and water to clean the mold to assist in mold removal ? "
Answer: As easy as it sounds, it's not the case. It has been discovered that by just disturbing the mold by touching it and even applying a chemical spray will launch mold spores to other neighboring areas to start new mold colonies.
To make matter's worse, bleach will kill the mold organism, but the body of the mold organism is still there in the air and possibly on the surface you have cleaned. The deceased mold organism can still be a health issue. Removing the organism, not just killing it is the key.
Question 2: " Who do I call for testing to see if I have mold removal issue ?"
Answer: I find many companies that not only remediate ( remove ) mold , but also test for mold as well.
There's a problem with being both a mold re-mediator and a testing company. Let me give you an example:
Let's say you call a home builder and ask him to build you a house. When he is finished he tells you that he has inspected and tested his work and he has done a great job. He says you don't to call the building inspector, because he is certified to test his own workmanship
Its great that this builder has passed himself , but may be he didn't do a great job? Is the area really healthy ? How will you ever know?
Yes he/she can show you independent lab results, but remember who took the samples for testing, the student himself.
No court in this land will accept that statement!!!
This is why you need an independent Certified Industrial hygienist to test for mold issues. Here are the reasons:
- Independent certified industrial hygienist will have no other agenda, but to give you the straight facts.
. A Certified Industrial Hygienist tests results usually are taken seriously by court systems.
. An industrial hygienist will take legal liability of testing results.
. An independent certified industrial hygienist's have the highest certification to test for mold.
As you can see being a mold removal company and a testing company can get you and the mold remediation company in trouble.
Question 3: " We keep cleaning the mold damage on the wall, but it keeps coming back. Why is this ?"
Answer: Actually there are two reasons:
A. There is possible mold inside or on the back side of the wall ( or material of concern ). Unless all the mold is removed ( including spores ), you will have mold growth coming back regularly.
B. As you cut away or clean the mold, just by disturbing the mold you will have the mold send out many more mold spores out in the air. These mold spores will land in the same area or in other areas and start new mold colonies.
So the question is how do you remove mold correctly ?
The answer is following the IICRC S520 guidelines for mold remediation and mold removal. Si Restoration follows these rules and actually gives a light description of the process below. Please remember that this is a light general overview and any complete information or questions about the IICRC S520 should be directed to SI Restoration at 1-800-356-0484 or writing to us at:

SI Restoration Mold Remediation Steps:
| Step 1 |
The first step is to search for any sign of mold. SI Restoration highly recommends that a Certified Industrial Hygienist ( IH ) be hired to test for air quality and for mold spore counts. When it is determined that mold remediation must be done, the process needs to start.
Step 2
The mold removal process begins by SI Restoration setting up containment barriers, decom chambers, and creating a negative pressure in the containment area. This process prevents any signs of mold that have been disturbed, leaving the affected areas. Inside the containment area, technicians are fully suited in hazmat gear and regulation breathing apparatus.
Step 3
When SI Restoration has completed their mold removal, the Certified Industrial Hygienist will perform a clearance test which will let SI Restoration know if they have passed and the area is safe.
SI Restoration is certified by the Mid Atlantic Hygiene Resource Center for mold removal.
