Sadly Washington DC has experienced it’s fair share of hoarding situations. Most would think that Washington DC would never be a place where hoarders would live.

Actually it’s just the opposite. Hoarders and those with cleanup issues are for the most part are very intelligent. Educators and those in nursing and the medical field seem to be a large statistic representing hoarding situations in Washington DC.
The latest hoarding situation involving a hoarder was Eloisa Diaz. Eloisa sadly was evicted from her home by the Washington DC authorities. They found trash 4 to 5 feet high with stereo equipment. Eloisa was also hoarding items she claims was being donated to Latin America, but never seemed to get there.
According to the source “Hoarding: A Dangerous Secret” by the Metropolitan Washington Council Of Governments Washington DC including Montgomery County, Prince George County, Arlington Virginia, Alexandria Virginia, and Fairfax Virginia in 2005 there was a total of 244 hoarders and in 2010 in jumped in 290 hoarders. These figures are based upon complaints and actual calls coming to local government agencies. This doesn’t include the many situations that are not called in or reported or the many hoarders who are still hiding their issue from the general public.

According to national studies it is estimated that 2 to 5% of the nation has some degree of hoarding symptoms. According to the census bureau the capitol area has 601,723 residence not including the areas surrounding the district in Maryland and Virginia. At 5% of 600,000 that would mean in the DC area there is 30,000 hoarders at anyone time. Most of us can not imagine that many hoarders in one small area.
But most hoarders do not make their issues public. Many family members have no idea that there loved one’s have a hoarding issue. Many of you maybe surprised to read this and disbelieve that anyone could not know of a loved one’s issue.
But as a hoarding cleanup expert I have talked to enough hoarders to realize that this is true. Hoarders are very embarrassed of their situation as their houses become almost impossible to navigate through, but smell.
The smell comes from rotted food and human urine human feces that has not been disposed of. When hoarding becomes out of control the hoarder avoids outsiders from coming into the house including plumbers and repairman. The lack of repairs creates toilets that don’t work and ovens and refrigerators that become broken.
As you can see our nations capital is not alone with this epidemic. There is hope as local hoarding task forces start to organize and the community starts to take action.
